In a democracy, an electoral mandate is the manifestation of the trust of the majority of voters. It is through this trust that power devolves to an elected people's representative, and it is the collective trust of the electorate which is the foundation of a government constituted by the elected representatives. The onus of keeping this trust intact throughout the tenure of a government lies on the elected representatives individually and collectively.
If the trust of the electors is shaken or eroded, the impact it will have on the foundation of a government requires no over emphasis.
